Canadian Content: The McGill Undergraduate Journal of Canadian Studies is an annual interdisciplinary publication organized by the Canadian Studies Students’ Association (CSAUS) at McGill University. Relaunching in Fall 2025, the journal offers undergraduate students a unique platform to critically engage with Canada, showcase their research, and gain valuable academic publishing experience.
Publishing in a journal is a rare and valuable opportunity for undergraduates. It allows you to share your work with a broader audience, develop your academic writing skills, and contribute to meaningful conversations about Canadian issues. Whether you are submitting a paper you wrote for a class or creating something new, Canadian Content provides the opportunity to elevate your academic work.
Articles must be submitted by May 26th, 2025, at 11:59 PM EST. Please review the guidelines on this page and fill out the Google Form below to submit your article. Early submissions are encouraged!
Please email the Editor-in-Chief at rafay.ahmed2@mail.mcgill.ca for any questions.
Who Can Submit
Submissions are open to McGill University undergraduate students. If you are an undergraduate student from another Canadian post-secondary institution, please email the Editor-in-Chief at rafay.ahmed2@mail.mcgill.ca to discuss your eligibility to submit.
What We're Looking For
The journal seeks original research articles and revised coursework that critically engage with Canada’s complexities. This means that you can either submit a paper you wrote for a class at McGill University or create a new piece of research specifically for the journal. Submissions can explore a variety of fields, such as political science, history, sociology, Indigenous studies, cultural studies, public policy, environmental studies, etc. as long as articles should offer fresh perspectives and meaningful analysis of Canadian society, culture, history, or politics.
Word Count, Citations, and Formatting
Submissions should be 2,500 to 5,000 words, excluding the references and bibliography. Submissions must also adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style (author-date format) for in-text citations. A references section listing all cited works and a separate bibliography section for additional consulted sources are required.
Formatting requirements include:
• Title in bold at the top of the document.
• Text formatted in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins.
• Page numbers and the author's last name in the top-right corner of each page.
• A 150–200-word abstract abstract summarizing the article at the beginning.
• Authors are encouraged to use subheadings to improve clarity and organization.
While submissions do not need to fully adhere to a style guide, please follow these Canadian conventions to ensure consistency:
• Use Canadian spelling, such as "behaviour" instead of "behavior," "organize" instead of "organise," and centre" instead of center."
• Spell out numbers less than 10 (e.g., "three) and use numerals for numbers 10 and above.
• Use inclusive, respectful, and bias-free language, particularly when discussing topics related to race, gender, and socioeconomic status.
Review and Editing Process
All submissions will undergo an initial review by the editorial team, where they will be evaluated for originality, relevance, and alignment with the journal’s focus. Authors of accepted articles will then be notified, and will work closely with a copy editor to refine their work and ensure compliance with the journal’s style guide. Finalized articles will be published in the Fall 2025 issue.
Why Submit
Publishing in Canadian Content provides undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to showcase their academic work, build their academic portfolios, and gain valuable insights into the publishing process. Working with experienced editors, you’ll develop your writing and editing skills, while contributing to important conversations about Canada.
